Young voices helping shape Ulverstone’s waterfront

The first round of community engagement for the Ulverstone Waterfront Master Plan is now underway, and we want to hear from everyone who has ideas for the future of our waterfront.

The Ulverstone waterfront is one of our community’s most valued places. Over the next 20 years, the Master Plan will help guide how the area evolves, balancing what people already love about the waterfront with opportunities to make it even better for future generations.

The Community Values Survey is now open, giving residents and visitors an opportunity to tell us what they value about the waterfront, how they use it now and what they would like to see in the future.

But we also know that traditional surveys don’t reach everyone.

That’s why, as part of this project, Council is exploring different ways to involve people who can sometimes be left out of traditional community engagement, including children and young people.

Simple, ready-to-use classroom resources have been developed for local schools, encouraging students to think about what they value about the waterfront and what could make it an even better place in the future. Every class that submits feedback by 30 September will also go into the draw to win an Ulverstone Waterslide pass for every student in the class.

And the ideas are already coming in.

Grade 5/6 students from West Ulverstone Primary School have been busy brainstorming their vision for the waterfront, with all 21 students contributing ideas.

Their suggestions included a footbridge or ferry connecting West Ulverstone and Anzac Park, further improvements to the skatepark and pump track, more food options near popular recreation areas and improvements to the waterslide.

Students also told us about the things they already love and want to see protected or built upon. The Dinosaur Park featured strongly, while other ideas included soccer goals and free-to-use sporting equipment.

Their feedback is a great reminder of why hearing from young people matters. The waterfront we plan today is the waterfront they will inherit, use and enjoy for decades to come.

West Ulverstone Primary is one of the first schools to take part, and we’re looking forward to hearing from more students, families, community groups, businesses, clubs and waterfront users throughout the engagement process.

Whether you walk along the river every morning, take the kids to the playground, use the sporting facilities, or simply have an idea about what the waterfront could become, your perspective will help shape the plan.

The Community Values Survey is open until 27 September 2026.

Everyone aged 18 and over who completes the survey can also enter the draw to win a Leven River Cruise for two, valued at $485.
