Kiely Plumbing
From Pop’s shed to a regional success
58 years of family, craftsmanship, and community care
The Kiely Plumbing story started off in a humble shed in Sulphur Creek, where “Pop” first set up shop 58 years ago. What started as a one-man operation has grown into a respected, family-run business that now employs 30 incredible people across Ulverstone and Burnie, from apprentices and tradespeople to customer care and management.
Driven by care, ingenuity, and community connection, Kiely Plumbing specialises in both residential and commercial plumbing services. But their mission has always been about more than pipes and fittings — it’s about improving lives, not just homes.
“It’s home,” the team says. “Our family, our heritage, our values - they all stem from here. The sense of community, opportunity for growth, and natural beauty made it the obvious choice then, and still does now.”
That sense of belonging has shaped the way they do business. In a place where trust and relationships matter, Kiely Plumbing has built lasting connections with clients, suppliers, and other local businesses across the North-West Coast — from Hawley Beach to Sisters Beach.
“There’s a reliability and loyalty here that makes doing business meaningful,” Sam said “People look out for each other. It’s one of the reasons we’ve stayed and thrived for so long.”
Regional strength
Being based in a regional community brings its own kind of strength. The Kiely team has found that local tradespeople often develop a diverse and adaptable skillset which is something they see as a true advantage. “Our people are multi-skilled and talented. That versatility makes us better at what we do.”
While accessing specialised suppliers can occasionally be challenging, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. “Life here has balance,” they say. “We’ve got the coastline, short commutes, and the kind of space that lets families thrive. We’re raising three kids under four in a safe, connected community with some of the cleanest air in the world. You can jet away for a warm holiday and come back to nature — where business has a deeper purpose.”
Leading with innovation and collaboration
If there’s one thing the Kiely team would do differently, it would be to embrace innovation sooner. “Regional businesses don’t need to follow the mainland’s lead — we can be the ones setting the pace. Leaning into digital transformation early opens up huge opportunities.”
They’re also passionate about the power of collaboration. “There’s so much potential when businesses share knowledge. Whether it’s supporting apprenticeships, encouraging women in trades, or building more sustainable practices, we’re stronger when we work together.”
Building a stronger future together
Kiely Plumbing believes visibility is key for the region’s next chapter. A united investment brand or business portal could help showcase local success stories, attract new talent, and encourage others to invest. “A resource that highlights what’s possible here — from council support to real business stories — would give newcomers confidence and connection.”
Their advice for anyone looking to start or relocate a business here is simple: “Engage with the community — don’t just sell to it. Relationships matter here. If you show up with integrity and offer real value, this region will give back tenfold.”
For Kiely Plumbing, the future is about continuing to evolve while staying true to their roots. “Our industry and our region are changing fast. Keeping that momentum going — empowering the next generation, embracing innovation, and leading with heart — that’s what matters most.”
And as they see it, Central Coast Council is helping pave the way. “There are some great people creating real momentum for a better place to be. We’re proud to be part of that story.”
