Make it Central

Construction & Manufacturing

Building a strong future, together

Backed by skilled people, local support, and the right foundations for long-term growth, the Central Coast is a place where construction and manufacturing continue to evolve, innovate, and thrive.

Economic force

on the North-West Coast

The Central Coast is the economic force of construction and manufacturing on Tasmania’s North-West Coast. Home to tradies, makers, and inventors, the sector underpins the regional economy - supporting local jobs, enabling innovation, and driving sustainable growth.

With 589 registered construction and manufacturing businesses, these industries are among the region’s strongest performers, supported by deep connections between manufacturing, construction, and agriculture that create a resilient, value-added economy built on local capability.

A diverse and skilled industry base

in a range of sectors

Manufacturing employs over 800 local people, representing almost 9% of the Central Coast workforce, with food product manufacturing accounting for more than 60% of sector jobs and over 70% of value-added manufacturing output.

This reflects the region’s rich agricultural base and the importance of downstream processing close to source. The sector is further strengthened by skilled trades and specialist capabilities in furniture making, joinery, metal fabrication, transport equipment manufacturing, and agricultural machinery - demonstrating adaptability, ingenuity, and strong local problem-solving.

An industry built to grow

and already has

Construction and manufacturing have shown steady growth over the past decade, with approximately 90 new jobs added between 2016 and 2021. Growth in metal and fabricated metal manufacturing, transport equipment manufacturing, and construction-related activity reflects rising demand across the North-West Coast.

Emerging opportunities in advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, circular economy initiatives, and new technologies are opening pathways for diversification and long-term resilience - particularly where strong synergies exist between primary production and manufacturing.

Council supporting industry

and infrastructure

Central Coast Council is actively planning for future growth by ensuring the right conditions are in place for industry to invest and expand. This includes:

  • Expanding the supply of industrially zoned land
  • Supporting access to ready-built, fit-for-purpose industrial premises
  • Advocating for infrastructure, transport, and affordable, reliable energy solutions
  • Monitoring land supply to ensure future demand does not constrain growth

Council is progressing the planning and master planning of Maskells Road as a key future industrial precinct, supporting connected, well-designed industrial growth that meets the needs of modern businesses.

A place to build what’s next

Scale and innovate

The Central Coast offers a collaborative environment where construction and manufacturing businesses can establish, scale, and innovate. Opportunities exist to:

  • Expand food manufacturing and product development
  • Participate in circular economy and agri-food innovation
  • Align with state-wide advanced manufacturing, defence, trade, and renewable energy programs
  • Contribute to major regional construction and infrastructure projects

As renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and electric vehicle technologies continue to grow across the North-West, the Central Coast is well positioned to support these industries with skilled labour, strong supply chains, and proactive Council advocacy.

With a diverse, self-contained economy and a strong belief in local capability, the Central Coast is a place where ideas are built, industries evolve, and the next generation of construction and manufacturing can thrive.
